Never Be Afraid to Be Smart

dontbeafraidtobesmartHappy Friday! I stumbled across this quote by Emma Watson- and I thought it was wonderful. I remember middle school and high school-  being one of the smart girls wasn't cool.  I was there- I graduated with honors and was one of those students that got bent out of shape over a B instead of an A. I was editor of the yearbook and was taking college courses my junior and senior year of school. I also hated high school and middle school. But you know what? I wouldn't change those years for the world. Joining yearbook and taking all the art classes I could helped me discover what I really wanted to do in life. My college courses in high school transferred when I went to college and reduced how much I had to pay for college in the long run. My study habits from high school paid off immensely in college too. I graduated from college with honors and was offered a job within a week of my graduation. Plus- it was during college that I met my husband and got married (yep... got married while I was still in college- not sure I would recommend that. but it worked for us).Did I date in high school? Not really. Did I got to dances and events in high school? Yes- but I discovered I didn't enjoy them so I eventually ended up just going to take pictures for the yearbook. High school will become a part of you- it will follow your around in your history- but it is not where you will live your life. Chances are you won't meet your spouse there or stay close to all the people in your class. It is okay to be smart. It is okay to be smart in high school and middle school. It is great to enjoy that time of your life- but don't sacrifice anything about who you are for popularity. I promise to you popularity is fleeting- and fades to a moot point quickly. What will stick around with you is whether you spent time with people you liked and invested in the things that interested you.
